At two different levels there may be paralegal requirements that you need to satisfy depending on the US state you are in. When aspiring to become a paralegal, you simply need to satisfy the eligibility criteria of the specific paralegal certificate, certification, or degree program that you want to enroll in. These requirements are specific to program and different programs have different eligibility criteria.

Paralegal requirements to become a Legal Assistant relate to the skills needed by you. Some of them that you need include strong listening skills, court proceedings knowledge, and that of court documentation procedures. Other skills needed include general knowledge pertaining to local laws, usage of computers and related technical knowledge, and the reading of and indexing of legal documents. You also need to understand the importance of upholding ethics in the paralegal field.

Requirements are also imposed on the institution that offers a paralegal certificate program. Not only must be it and the program that it offers be accredited, but it must also be ABA approved. This is for it to receive recognition for enabling a candidate to bag a job in the paralegal industry on its basis. Candidates who join institutions offering paralegal courses that do not meet both of these two requirements can face issues in bagging jobs later.

The other paralegal requirements relate to the specific job which you will need to perform after you have become a paralegal. The requirements relating to a specific job will depend on the paralegal job description. Different types of paralegal jobs will have different paralegal requirements.

Paralegal duties in respect of jobs that you may perform as legal assistants include involvement in legal research, locating witnesses and interviewing them, and maintaining communication with the clients. Some other paralegal duties include signing letters on behalf of the attorney for whom you work and preparing a summary of interrogations, testimonies, hearings, and depositions by the attorney.

Depending on the nature of paralegal work assigned to you your duties can include the drafting of mortgages, separation agreements, and contracts. Other duties that you may have to perform include organizing and analyzing information for the attorney who supervises your work. They may involve administrative hearings and real estate closings.

California is the only State in the US in which you need to satisfy some statutory paralegal requirements. In all other US states there are no mandatory statutory paralegal requirements imposed on you. In California, an ABA approved paralegal certificate is mandatory as per state law. In other states this is a preference but yet not a mandatory requirement. Moreover, the other paralegal requirements in California make it imperative for you to pass a continuing education course and exam every two years.
